The Earth Museum is pleased to announce the launch of a new initiative based in West Wight developed in collaboration with two island creatives.
“Portraits of a Landscape" is made possible through support from the Isle of Wight Past Futures grant programme and aims to showcase compelling narratives about individuals who have significantly contributed to life within this UNESCO Biosphere region.
Pete Johnstone will further his photographic portrait series, West Wight People and People and Place, within this project, partnering closely with soundscape artist Nathan Holt to create an integrated collection of sounds and images. The resulting multi-media sensory portraits will serve as the centrepiece of an exhibition at Dimbola Museum and Gallery in September 2026, highlighting the distinctive character of West Wight.
Additionally, we intend to collaborate with local schools in West Wight to develop a heritage education resource for our digital platform, ensuring enduring access long after the exhibition concludes.
Isle of Wight Past Futures is a heritage grant programme funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to help community organizations on the Isle of Wight capture and curate local history, with a focus on stories that are often overlooked. Facilitated by Creative Island and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation.
